Exceptional work from Sotheby’s evening sale of Impressionist & Moderns Art in New York in May 7th sale brought a strong total of $230 million, nearing its pre-sale high estimate of $235.1 million. The sale was led by a selection of works from the Collection of Alex & Elisabeth Lewyt, which totaled an impressive $88.6 million.

Paul Cézanne’s Les Pommes from 1889-90, a strikingly modern composition that attracted competitive bidding, soared to $41.6 million, above its high estimate of $35 million. Multiple bidders also competed for Amedeo Modigliani’s famed portraitL’Amazone, from the same collection, which achieved $25.9 million.
Auguste Rodin’s iconic sculpture Le Penseur brought $15.2 million, over its $12 million high estimate.
Paysage à La Ciotat, a fine example of Georges Braque’s Fauve works, set a new auction record for the artist at $15.8 million, far above the prior record of $10.2 million. Another artist record was set for Honoré Daumier with his work on paper Les Avocats, which achieved $2.6 million.
Both the sale total and the sell-through rate of 84.5% rank among Sotheby’s highest in this category in recent years, worldwide.
